My journey into social media marketing began with a realization that much too often, the focus in this industry is on the consultant and their ability to get clients seen. However, in a world where businesses have a million-and-one ways to be seen, the real challenge for businesses is to leverage social media to get tangible results. Like all marketers, I did my research; I looked at the data. And the data told me that while social media consultants had dropped the ball. They were so heavily focused on the idea of getting attention, they the missed the mark on understanding how impactful social media can be as a tool for overall business growth and success.
Many of these consultants don't have a background in marketing. They base their solutions on metrics that are beneficial to the platforms where they share content - not the clients they serve. They say things like "spend more time engaging, share more content, increase your ad spend, work with creators", but in reality none of these things matter without a customized blueprint for businesses to legitimize social media as a true marketing channel.
What I've learned through my work with business clients across multiple industries is that in order to develop an effective social media strategy, I need much more than a simple questionnaire. To truly give my clients a solution that is designed to get results , I need to speak with stakeholders, I need review current and past campaigns, both on and off social media. I need to do a competitive analysis, review and/or conduct market research and so much more. As a CMO you need someone who not only understands social media, but also understands marketing. Someone who speaks your language, and can translate it into a comprehensive solution that takes social media from a place that eats resources to drive buzz, to a place that maximizes resources to drive business.
Throughout my career, I've helped businesses leverage social media to attract new customers, identify and secure strategic partnerships, launch new products and services, create new opportunities and attract investors - all while decreasing the overall percentage of their marketing budget allocated to social media by 15% - 30%, and increasing ROI by 10% - 15% on average.
